![]() A cool invaders game that you can use 0n your own web site! A few years ago, when Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 was first released, On The Net undertook to learn about the new Dynamic HTML features of the new browser. We decided to go about that by creating a technology demo in the form of a space invaders style game. Invaders! was the result and years later it's still getting comments like this from visitors: "Let me say you did a wonderful job on this program. Not only do I enjoy it but it's one of the most popular on my web site." "When I first saw your Invaders game (a few months ago), I was simply blown away. The implementation of the game is absolutely wonderful :-)" "I was going through your Invaders script and must say it's one of the best DHTML games I ever came across." "That was amazing! I've seen a whole bunch of attempts at dhtml games on the web and yours exceeds all by far." Where can I see Invaders! running? As long as you're running a version of Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or better then just click here: Do let us know if you like it. We love the emails! Am I allowed to put Invaders! on my web site? Yep! No problem. Even companies are allowed to use it. The only thing we don't want you to do is try to pass it off as your own work. The rules on using Invaders! are simple. You can use it as long as you don't remove or change the copyright notices, the OTN graphic or the HTML link back to the OTN web site. We love the extra hits that links from Invaders! games generate and it seems fair trade for letting you use Invaders! for free. If you'd like On The Net to produce you a special version of Invaders! with graphics that suit your web site then we're happy to do that and we'll only charge you for the time to produce the new graphics. Can I modify Invaders! to suit my own web site? Yep! See the section above ("Am I allowed to put Invaders! on my web site?") for the rules on what you can and cannot change. If you'd prefer then On The Net can redesign the graphics to suit your web site and we'll only charge you for the time to produce the new images. How do I put Invaders! on my web site? Easy! Just download this ZIP file: Unzip it into a new directory called "invaders" in your web site and then place a link in your site to "invaders/index.html". That's it! If you want to change any of the code or the graphics you may do so just as long as you don't remove any copyright notices or OTN images or the HTML link back to the OTN web site. We love the extra hits that links from Invaders! games generate and it seems fair trade for letting you use Invaders! for free. Why does Invaders! only work in Internet Explorer? Invaders was written a few years ago, right after Internet Explorer 4.0 was first released. Back then Netscape support for Dynamic HTML was not sufficient to make Invaders! work on both browsers. For that reason the game was written specifically for Internet Explorer 4.0 and will not work on any version of Netscape. Will you be producing a Netscape compatible version? We'd love to produce a Netscape compatible version of Invaders!. The game has been unexpectedly successful for us. We really wish we'd charged people for it! Since we made it free, however, it's difficult to justify spending the time needed to make it work on Netscape. There's a lot of code in there that we'd write differently if we wrote it again today so it's not as simple as just changing a few bits. All in all we'd much rather write a brand new game of a different sort that supports Internet Explorer and Netscape. |
